China’s Defense Ministry accused the Pentagon of exaggerating China’s defense capabilities and its military edge over Taiwan in order to boost US weapon sales to the island, Associated Press reported. The statement came shortly after the Pentagon issued its annual report to Congress on China’s military, which typically draws strenuous objections from Beijing. In remarks posted on the ministry’s website on Monday, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said the Pentagon’s comments ran contrary to recent efforts to strenghen ties between the armies. China demands that the US “stop making comments not conducive to China-US relations and the mutual trust between the two armies,” Geng said. Geng also said that the Pentagon report falsely accuses China of launching cyber-attacks.
