China to add 59 theme parks by 2020: Report

China plans to build 59 new theme parks and five new water parks by 2020, investing RMB148.13 billion (US$23.8 billion) and attracting an estimated 166.3 million people, Want China Times reported, citing a report by global engineering firm AECOM (ACM.NYSE) in Beijing Business Today. Although the scale of the Chinese theme park industry exceeds that of the US and Japan, the market is relatively immature, and most of the nation’s theme park developers focus more on the value of the enclosed land for the parks. Tourism industry insider Xu Fan said less than 10% of China’s theme parks are profitable.
