Chinese health officials are expected to announce an AIDS cooperation partnership with the University of Maryland's Institute of Human Virology, which was founded by one of the co-discoverers of the virus, as China aims to battle what it fears will be a ten-fold surge in HIV infection in China over the next five years, The AP reported. The partnership between the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Maryland covers collaboration on clinical trials, and improving tests and vaccines. China says about 840,000 Mainlanders have the virus, but the UN said that number could reach 10 million by 2010 if the epidemic is unaddressed.
