The US and China may hold two more rounds of talks before the trade war truce period expires on March 1, a diplomatic source told the SCMP, as both sides fight to avoid a deepening of tensions.
A Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu He is in Washington this week for two days of talks, following on from the previous round of negotiations earlier this month. The US team will be headed by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who have offered contrasting interpretations of the progress made so far.
Among several other headline criticisms, the US is pushing for structural reforms to China’s trade framework and the role of the state sector, which many experts believe will be a step too far for Beijing.
“China will not accept all demands by the US and make full concessions. There will likely be some adjustments or another deadline. The talks will continue and you cannot expect to solve all the issues at once,” said Liu Weidong, expert in US affairs at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
