China approves biotech crops

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that China approved four varieties of genetically modified corn and seven varieties of genetically modified canola for import, eliminating a barrier to trade for US farmers. US Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman said that China also committed to reviewing its policies toward two other biotech corn varieties. The USDA estimates that China will import 100,000 metric tons of corn this year, an increase from the 30,000 metric tons it imported in 2003.
