China has banned the import of US eggs and poultry after a strain of H5N8 influenza was discovered last month in wild birds and backyard flocks of chickens and guinea fowl in states along the western coast of the United States, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council. The group criticized the decision, saying the bird flu outbreaks in the US thus far have occurred far away from the major US commercial poultry production regions. China’s ban comes after more than 20 countries have imposed restrictions on imports of poultry products from certain US states or the entire country.
