Customs figures showed that in the first nine months of 2001, China exported 217,904 tonnes of primary aluminium, more than three times as much as in the same period of 2000. Its exports stood at 164,851 tonnes, a year-on-year drop of 60 per cent.
A senior industry executive, speaking at a conference in Shenzhen, said that China would be confirmed as a net importer of nickel by 2005 due to growing demand from the domestic stainless steel industry.
