Tourism revenues in 2001 were Yn499.5bn, a year-on-year increase of 10.5 per cent, according to the China National Tourism Administration. China received a total of 11.23m foreign visitors, excluding those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
This strong performance was achieved despite a downturn in the world tourism sector following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US. The administration said China was hardly affected by the attacks because it is perceived as one of the safest tourist destinations.
