China said on Tuesday that it signed a deal on March 31 to allow substantial imports of Brazilian corn into the country in a move intended to lessen its dependence on the US for the grain, The Wall Street Journal reported. About 90% of China’s imported corn comes from the US. China’s shift to a protein-rich diet and rising industrialization has raised risk of a corn-supply deficit, prompting Beijing to secure other sources outside the country. Brazil is only one among at least seven other nations from which China has been trying to secure more corn.
