China brings EU to WTO over shoe tariffs

China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the European Union over its decision to extend anti-dumping levies on Chinese and Vietnamese leather shoe imports by 15 months to protect EU shoemakers, the Financial Times reported. The trade action arises amid deteriorating relations between Beijing and Brussels but is only the second time China has taken Europe to the WTO’s formal dispute resolution process. The European Footwear Alliance has come out in support of China, saying that the EU’s decision to extend the tariffs had been founded on "a very questionable investigation and a flawed analysis," adding that the extension of shoe import duties could result in retaliatory measures on EU exports to China.
