China announced the completion of an internet and phone monitoring program in Tibet, which requires telephone and internet users to register under their real identities, Reuters reported, citing state media. All 2.76 million fixed-line and mobile phone users and 1.47 million internet users had registered under their real names by the end of last year, according to Xinhua News Agency. The monitoring program was part of an official campaign to crack down on ‘rumors,’ with Beijing particularly focused on the role of mobile phones and internet in fanning social unrest in the region.
