China's Ministry of Commerce released a report in which it criticized US trade policy as excessively protectionist and out of line with the spirit of the World Trade Organization (WTO). It is China's first government report on US trade policy. China cited measures taken by the US to protect its steel and agricultural sectors as breaches of WTO rules. The report was released after the US threatened to take action against China via the WTO regarding China's trade and tax practices. US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick urged China to do more to fulfill its WTO obligations and said the US may employ special safeguards on textiles in China if it is found to be unfaithful to its WTO commitments.
