Beijing on Thursday officially denied claims by current and former US intelligence officials that Chinese hackers have inserted malicious code into US electrical grid control systems, the Wall Street Journal reported. US sources previously told the paper that Chinese and Russian hackers have inserted malicious software tools into electrical systems that could be used to destroy components of the US grid in the event of war. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a press conference that “the intrusion doesn’t exist at all,” and noted that the White House has also denied the reports. A former US Department of Homeland Security official said the espionage is spread across regions of the country, and that cyber attacks against US infrastructure assets have been on the rise.
