The Chinese government detained 82 people in the first half of the year on suspicions that they were planning terrorist attacks on the Olympics, AP reported. The suspects were detained during raids on five terrorist rings in the Xinjiang region. Police raided 41 locations that were labeled as "illegal religious schools" and "jihad training centers." Officials have not given details on individual cases. Police are still seek ing 66 individuals associated with terrorism, religious extremism and separatism. Experts say an Al-Qaeda-linked group called the East Turkestan Islamic Movement poses a threat to the government. Xinjiang’s indigenous Turkic Uighur people have fought Chinese rule for decades.
