China Eastern Airlines is planning a joint venture with the Yunnan provincial government, Reuters reported. The airline would hold a 65% stake in the venture, aimed at boosting its business in southwestern China, although specific financial details of the deal have not yet been determined. China Eastern hopes the venture will help to increase its market share in Yunnan province to over 50% by the end of the year. The venture will be built on top of China Eastern’s existing Yunnan unit, and the airline will add three Boeing 737-700 aircraft to the Yunnan unit’s existing 37 aircraft this year, with a plan to add an additional 10 planes by 2011.
