China has surpassed the US as the world's top consumer in every basic food, energy and industrial commodity except oil, according to the environmental think tank, Earth Policy Institute. China leads the world in the consumption of grain, meat, coal and steel, but lags the US in the consumption of cars and personal computers. The Chinese, however, are the top consumers of television sets, mobile phones and refrigerators.
