China ex-railway minister sentenced to death

China’s former railway minister Liu Zhijun was sentenced to death with a two-year suspension on Monday for bribery and abuse of power, The Wall Street Journal reported. Liu, known for his plan to rapidly integrate high-speed trains in China, helped businesswoman Ding Yuxin win about US$489 million in contracts with the ministry, while collecting a consulting fee of RMB10 million. The death sentence was suspended for two years and will most likely be commuted to life in prison based on good behavior. The Ministry of Railways is to be dismantled, separating its commercial and administrative functions.
