China, India grow in shrinking newspaper market

While newspapers sales are generally collapsing in developed Western markets, they're growing in China and India and across Asia which now accounts for a quarter of global industry revenues, according to a report by the Associated Press. Citing World Association of Newspaper (WAN) data, AP reported that 66 of the world's top circulation newspapers are in Asia, with Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun heading the list with 14,081,000 daily copies sold. According to WAN data, Japan publishes 20 of the world's 100 top-circulation titles. China and India claim 16 apiece, with the US just slightly ahead with 18. While circulation and revenues continue to decline in the West, circulations in China increased by nearly a quarter in the last five years, with advertising revenue jumping by 87% in that time.
