China’s ambassador to India has described the relationship between the two countries as "very fragile" ahead of Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to New Delhi, the Financial Times reported. Stressing that bilateral ties are easily damaged and difficult to repair, Ambassador Zhang Yan said it was up to the Indian government to "provide guidance to the public to avoid a war of words." Wen’s 400-strong delegation is expected to strike deals worth as much as US$20 billion during the visit. But despite increasing trade in recent years and cooperation on issues such as climate change, there are widespread concerns in India about China’s rise and its future intentions in South Asia. The two sides are also trying to resolve a decades-long border dispute. Responding to Zhang’s remarks, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said that China had nothing to fear from India’s "vibrant and noisy democracy."
