Chinese officials responded to US chipmaker Intel's vow to halt sales of its Centrino technology to China, saying that the country would not change its plan to require computer makers to adopt a mainland standard for encrypting wireless (WI-Fi) communications. Intel said it will stop selling the Centrino chipset before the government's June 1 deadline to start selling products based on the Chinese standard. Around 25% of the laptops sold in China in 2003 used the chip.
