China is a major threat to India’s IT sector

[photopress:Rajiv_Kishore_1.jpg,full,alignright]China’s growing economic stature in IT is a major concern for India.

Dr Rajiv Kishore, associate professor, School of Management, State University of New York, USA, said this while speaking on Challenges in outsourcing of IT-enabled services, a seminar organized by the Jaipuria Institute of Management.

He said, ‘India will take a long time to be on par with China. China is quietly moving forward and is already competing with the US. Since bulk of the products used all over the world are manufactured in China, it’s a concern.’

Dr Kishore said India is now ranked high on data security issues.

He said, ‘Due to cheap labor, the physical security systems in India are much stronger than in the US. Contract writing is another sensitive issue. People think that they will be bound by the complex rules of the company by signing the contract.’

Dr Kishore, seen above in the best picture we could find which is, admittedly, less than great, is in India to conduct several executive development programs for training managers.

He said the answer to limit employee attrition may not be in higher salaries as it would destroy the cost advantage that attracts outsourcing to India and China from the West.

He said, ‘Recruitment and retention are major challenges for the IT sector. These sectors need to devise suitable strategies and programs to identify the right people and develop suitable skills in their employees. This would help in building organizational loyalty.’

Dr Kishore said the big companies in the United States were cutting down the number of their employees and outsourcing everything.

‘In the US, you will hardly find anything manufactured. Most of the manufacturing is outsourced and many products read ‘designed in California, made in China’. As a result, large number of factories have been closed in the United States.’

Now he is worrying about the effect China could have on India.
