China and Japan are likely to cooperate on developing telecommunications services as China attempts to build a viable third-generation (3G) mobile technology market, Reuters reported, citing Japanese media. Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao are expected to reach an agreement when they meet in Beijing today. An official at Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications admitted that collaboration on 3G was likely, but said the specifics of the deal had yet to be decided upon. Japan has deep experience operating 3G mobile phone networks and making 3G cell phones, all of which could benefit China’s telecommunications industry. Japanese cell phone makers, though, have struggled to gain a foothold in China’s massive mobile phone market.
