China to launch $16m aerospace project

China’s cabinet could soon invest up to US$16 billion in an aircraft engine development program, Reuters reported, quoting Xinhua News Agency report citing unidentified sources. The investment would mainly be used for technology, designs and materials related to aircraft engine manufacturing, the state-run Xinhua quoted an unidentified professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics as saying. The project is currently going through approval procedures in the State Council and could soon be confirmed, he added. China’s aerospace companies have not yet produced a trusted, high-performance jet engine, and the country remains reliant on Russian and Western makers for equipping its military and commercial aircraft.
