China lends US$1b to Vietnam

China has agreed to loan Vietnam US$1billion to finance three power plants, including a coal-fired plant on the border in Quang Ninh province, the Financial Times reported. Funds will also be used to upgrade railways and build a police academy. With the Vietnamese economy enjoying 7% to 8% annual growth, new infrastructure is needed to alleviate growing congestion. Last week, Vietnam raised US$750 million in a bond issue.
