China likely to pledge billions of dollars to EU infrastructure fund

Beijing will likely pledge billions of dollars to Europe’s new infrastructure fund at an upcoming summit on June 29, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed European Union diplomat and a draft statement of the announcement that leaves the exact amount undefined. France, Germany, Italy and Poland have each announced planned contributions of EUR8 billion each (US$8.964 billion) for the European Fund for Strategic Investment, while Luxembourg and Spain have pledged smaller amounts. A large Chinese investment could raise questions about the governance of the fund, which is thus far a strictly European institution.
