China Mobile, China’s largest telecom operator, is planning to extend its third-generation mobile network from 10 eastern cities to include all provincial capitals following the Beijing Olympics, the South China Morning Post reported. The network, which uses the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard, currently has 52,000 trial subscribers, and has so far seen slow adoption. China Mobile has been trying to increase its TD-SCDMA subscriber base by providing users with free handsets and rebates on domestic tariffs for voice calls.
