Tourists from the Chinese mainland made more than 71 million overseas during the first half of 2018, an increase of 15% year-on-year, the South China Morning Post reports.
Chinese online travel firm Ctrip attributed the continued surge in outbound tourism to the fact that it is becoming increasingly easy for residents in lower-tier Chinese cities to obtain visa approvals, as well as the opening of more direct international flight connections from these smaller cities.
Most mainland Chinese tourists visit destinations in Asia, with Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia among the most popular, according to data from a research group under China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
