China passenger car sales up 18%, BYD sales down 6% in August

Sales of passenger cars and trucks in China increased 18% year-on-year in August, AP reported. The China Passenger Car Association said Chinese consumers bought 1.02 million units last month. However, the uptick in overall sales did not help car and battery maker BYD (1211.HK), which reported today that August vehicle sales fell 5.9% month-on-month and 19%y-o-y. BYD, in which Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Group owns a 10% stake, sold 31,609 vehicles last month. The company has already decreased its sales targets for 2010 by 25%. It launched two new models in late August which it hopes will boost sales for the rest of the year, but China auto sales growth is slowing as government subsidies for car purchases run out.
