China performs 13 million abortions annually: state media

China performs about 13 million surgical abortions a year, AP reported, citing state media. The true number of abortions is thought to be higher, as the official statistic does not include procedures in unregistered rural clinics. However, state media did not provide year-to-year statistics or say whether the use of the procedures was on the rise. More than 60% of abortions are performed on single women between 20 and 29-years-old; Wu Shangchun, a government official quoted in state media, said nearly half of women undergoing abortions said they had not used any methods of contraception.
