Luo Yi, a vice-director at the State Environmental Protection Administration, said China's impact on the environment will increase by "five to six times given the current strategy for development", which is unsustainable in light of China's projected population of 1.46bn by 2020, state media reported. Luo said acid rain largely caused by coal burning was affecting one third of China's land mass, while 90% of China's rivers flowing through cities are severely polluted and 75% of its lakes are facing the same plight.
