New rules about the disposal of used home appliances and electronic products will come into effect on January 1, 2011.
The National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have drafted a recycling catalog and this includes TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and computers.
The number of scrapped appliances is estimated to top 50 million units annually in recent years and is set to increase at 20% each year.
Abandoned appliances will be collected through various channels and treated together to fully utilize the resources. Companies involved in the recycling and disposal industries will receive government subsidies, said an NDRC official.
CRIEnglish.com reports that solutions to issues like recycling charges and methods of payment have yet to be disclosed.
