China has set a 2015 target of 35 gigawatts in domestic solar power generation, more than quadrupling its 2012 generating capacity of 8 gigawatts, Reuters reported, citing a statement released from the State Council Monday. The boost could ease glut in the domestic solar panel industry amounting to a manufacturing capacity of 45 gigawatts, whereas global demand is estimated at 35 gigawatts. Analysts have voiced their doubts about China’s ability to meet the target, citing declines in solar subsidies and a lack of infrastructure. China is involved in widely publicized trade spats involving anti-dumping tariffs from the EU and US against Chinese solar panels.
