China resists US-led push for UN sanctions against Iran

China said UN-imposed sanctions would not be effective in dealing with Iran over its nuclear program, AFP reported. "I don’t think sanctions are the way out. The ultimate solution of the Iranian nuclear issue is through negotiations and dialogue," foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters in Beijing yesterday. Jiang’s comments came one day after the US warned Tehran of further sanctions over its nuclear program. China and Russia, which are both permanent members of the UN Security Council with the power to veto potential sanctions, have often resisted calls for sanctions against Iran. Tehran insists it has the right to develop nuclear technology for electricity generation and denies it is concealing a weapons program.
