China, Russia oppose North Korea sanctions

Tough sanctions put forward by the US to be imposed on North Korea following its claimed nuclear test have yet to receive support from China and Russia, AP reported. UN Security Council members were locked in negotiations till late Thursday night. US ambassador to the UN John Bolton said substantial progress had been made, with a revised proposal to go before the Security Council on Friday, although a vote isn't expected until Saturday. China and Russia oppose any resolution authorizing military action against North Korea as well as the inspection of cargo entering and leaving the country. They want to focus on restricting Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programs. Former Chinese foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan met with President George W. Bush Thursday in Washington to make the case for a softer line against North Korea, while South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is in Beijing on Friday.
