China, Taiwan cooperate in TD-LTE

Representatives from some of the biggest telecommunications companies in Taiwan and the mainland met in Shanghai last week to discuss how they can cooperate in mobile broadband.
The meeting was hosted by China Mobile, the world’s biggest mobile network operator by subscribers, and Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Attendees discussed "how they can combine their industry strengths and lead the world in the development of 4G wireless broadband."
The focus will be on TDD (Time Division Duplex) technology combined with LTE (Long Term Evolution), the mobile phone industry’s standard for 4G wireless broadband. The main rival technology is FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) technology.
PC World reports that China Mobile, which has nearly 570 million subscribers, is already a big backer of TDD technology in its 3G network, which is based on the TD-SCDMA standard. TD-SCDMA is China’s homegrown 3G standard.
