China Telecom plans India connection, regional acquisitions

China Telecom (CHA.NYSE, 0728.HK) said it is in talks with Indian carriers to establish a cable connection to India and is considering opportunities for overseas acquisitions, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Chinese firm is working with Indian companies, including Tata Communications (TCL.NYSE, 500483.BOM), to establish land-based connections between the two countries to supplement easily damaged undersea cables. A company executive told the Journal that China Telecom was particularly considering acquisitions in the Asia-Pacific region with operations in more than one country. The expansion plans are in line with China Telecom’s attempts to supplement anemic growth in China; its first-half net profit rose just 0.9% to US$1.36 billion.
