China Telecom says "preliminary study" underway after report on possible broadband bid in Mexico

A China Telecom spokesperson said the company was doing a preliminary study on investment in Mexico following a Reuters report that it is preparing a possible bid for Mexico’s new US$10 billion mobile broadband network, Reuters reported. The earlier report, which cited unnamed sources, said China Telecom was seeking Mexican partners to join it in a consortium for the project, with up to several billion dollars of financing already secured from Chinese state-controlled banks. The proposed network is part of a wider reform designed tjo break billionaire Carlos Slim’s hold on the Mexican Telecoms business and improve poor broadband penetration.
