China Telecom has signed an agreement with eight partners to offer video services on various devices such as mobile phones, handheld devices and televisions. The partners include Lenovo and ZTE.
The new service, "Yi Shi Tong," allows users to watch premium video content (another way of saying there will be a charge) across PC, mobile and TV platforms.
Tri-Sun Electronic Technology, Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing (IGRS) Working Group, China Telecom and the local government are all part of the joint venture. Wang Gui, GM of Tri-Sun, said the JV will initially have approximately RMB 100 million (US$15 million) in funds. Tri-Sun will provide an integrated communications platform, IGRS will draft standards, and China Telecom will provide internet-based network infrastructure and video content services.
TelecomPaper reported Wu Dongli, deputy general manager of China Telecom’s Shanghai branch, as saying, "We can push video content to any devices with an internet connection."
