China said the US should avoid official contact with Taiwan one day after the Pentagon approved a US$1.7 billion sale of military radar technology to Taiwan. In a meeting with US Secretary of State Colin Powell, China Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing pressed Washington to �oppose Taiwan independence,� according to Chinese media reports. The Pentagon approved the sale of the long-range radar system to Taiwan that would be capable of detecting ballistic or cruise missiles.
