China’s Ministry of Transport said Monday that "relevant agencies" are working to rescue a Chinese bulk carrier which was apparently hijacked in the Indian Ocean, state media reported. The ship named De Xin Hai, owned by Qingdao Ocean Shipping, was carrying coal along a route from South Africa to India with 25 seamen on board. Qingdao Ocean Shipping reported the to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center Monday afternoon. According to the European Union’s anti-piracy naval mission, the Chinese vessel was seized 700 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, signifying that Somali pirates are striking further away from their home base to avoid naval patrols.
