China's Sinopec has started work in what may turn out to be the deepest oil well on the continent, AFP
reported, quoting state media. Sinopec's plans for Chuanke No. 1 Well in
Sichuan province would see it reach a depth of 8,875 meters, more than
the height of Mount Everest. It will take the company some 676 days to
complete the project, at a cost of US$39 million. But the work could be
for nothing. Last July China drilled the 8,408-meter deep Tanshen
No. 1 Well in the Tahe field in northwest China's Tarim Basin but
discovered no gas. Eager to find new energy resources
at home and abroad, China continues to dig up fields but many are drying up
each year.
