China is taking a step to battle fake and dangerous drugs, following a scandal implicating the head of the State Food and Drug Administration, Reuters reported, citing state media. The government will review production licenses for 170,000 drugs given out between 1999 and 2002. The effort was sparked by Premier Wen Jiabao's order last month to investigate allegations that FDA official Zheng Xiaoyu took bribes in exchange for medicine approvals. Fake or bad drugs have killed dozens in China in recent years; in 2004, 13 babies died of malnutrition in Anhui province after being fed fake milk powder.
