According to its latest Five-Year Plan, the Chinese auto industry will make development and production of electric and hybrid vehicles its top priority.
By 2015, China aims to sell 1 million new-energy automobiles. The government will invest more than RMB100 billion (US$15 billion) over the next decade to make China the world leader in green cars.
The electric car seems bound to succeed. A test this week in Australia got a rave review: "Made by Mitsubishi and it’s electric and they call it iMiEV. I drove it . . . no power lag and a really pleasant experience. 160K range and a top speed of 130kph, 8 hours from empty to full charge on a 15 amp socket."
Environment 360 reports that in the UK, a government subsidy next year will take US$7,960 off the cost of new electric cars.
