China to promote new energy vehicles

China will promote the use of 20,000 new energy vehicles for public transportation by the end of this year.
A report released by the Ministry of Science and Technology said that by 2015, China will have over 1 million new energy vehicles, and by 2020, the number will grow to anywhere from 10 million to 100 million.
By 2011, China will have a production capacity of 150,000 such vehicles and key parts.
Last year, the country had 5,000 models of new energy vehicles. Over 70 new models have since hit the market.
People’s Daily Online reported Zhang Laiwu, the vice minister for science and technology, as saying China has already allocated RMB970 million (US$145.3 million) to subsidize new energy vehicles.
