Various Chinese departments are considering new ways to calculate the unemployment rate, reported South China Morning Post. Ding Yuanzhu, senior research fellow of the Academy of Macroeconomic Research under the State Development Planning Commission, said it was widely acknowledged in China that the official unemployment rate, which only includes urban residents who register for unemployment handouts, did not reflect the real situation. He went on to say that the National Bureau of Statistics, the Development Planning Commission and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security were now exploring new calculation methods.
