China is to set up a state-run nuclear technology company to boost its nuclear power generating capacity, the government announced. The new company will organize tenders, carry out technology transfer and negotiate contracts for nuclear power projects. China plans to more than double its nuclear generating capacity by 2020 in a bid to overcome energy shortfalls and shift its reliance from more polluting forms of power generation such as coal. At present China has nine operating reactors, with a capacity of 6,450 megawatts accounting for 1.4% of the country's total power supply.
