China to tighten checks on infant formula

New draft regulations will require infant formula producers to check each batch of raw materials and finished product for melamine, state media reported. The draft rules were released by quality watchdog the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ). They outline that raw materials and supplements used in the production of infant formula must comply with national or industry safety standards. The quality watchdog also said the use of non-dairy animal protein and other inedible materials is strictly banned. Reports on testing must be kept for at least two years, AQSIQ said. Melamine has continued to appear in the food chain despite widespread destruction of contaminated products after the 2008 milk scandal.
