China Unicom, the second largest mobile telecom carrier in China, hopes its third-generation 3G mobile business to become profitable in 2010. This according to Chang Xiaobing, CEO of China Unicom.
During the first half of this year, China Unicom will allot RMB30 billion to build a 3G network covering 55 major cities in the mainland. The company will set aside RMB 60 billion for the whole year, with 3G network covering 280 Chinese cities by end-2009.
Last week, China Unicom received the 3G license from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to offer 3G services based on the widely-used WCDMA standard.
China Unicom will try to expand the share of revenue generated from value-added services to 50% from the current 20% over the next two years.
