China Unicom holds talks to sell iPhone 4 in China

China Unicom (CHU.NYSE, 600050.SH, 0762.HK) is in talks to bring Apple’s (AAPL.NASDAQ) new iPhone 4 to China, state media reported. Li Gang, vice president of China Unicom, added that no timetable has been set for a launch as the handset first needs to be tested and win approval from the telecom industry regulator. The iPhone 4 was unveiled in San Francisco yesterday by Apple CEO Steve Jobs and will be released in the US in July. Li said there has been a “very satisfactory” surge in iPhone sales following product price cuts and a reduction in monthly fees for some of China Unicom’s third-generation services last month. The company has committed at least US$439 million to making 3G devices cheaper this year. China Unicom has struggled since launching the iPhone last October, partly due to prohibitive pricing and the absence of a Wi-Fi function. Gray market activity has also hampered sales.
