China Unicom (Europe), a UK-based wholly-owned subsidiary of China Unicom (Hong Kong), the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier, is reportedly planning to buy a 75% stake in Nigerian Telecommunications, or Nitel, for US$2.5 billion.
China Unicom said that apart from its investment, it will provide technology solutions and operations management to Nitel.
The investment will be a combined operation by the New Generation Consortium, which includes GiCell Wireless, China Unicom (Hong Kong) and Minerva Group.
China Knowledge reports that the New Generation Consortium was established in February this year to purchase the 75% stake in Nitel and the latter’s wireless unit M-Tel.
